SFDA Deputy Commissioner Wu Zhen attends the 4th Joint ChP-USP International Symposium
On October 21-22, 2010, the 4th Joint ChP-USP International Symposium cosponsored by the Chinese Pharmacopeia Commission (ChP), the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) and the Zhejiang Food and Drug Administration was held in HangzhouChina, following the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the ChP and the USP. Wu Zhen, Deputy Commissioner of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), attended the symposium and delivered a speech.
Wu pointed out that the development of the global pharmaceutical industry needs enhanced international communication and cooperation in drug standards. Drug quality and safety has become a worldwide concerned issue. Cooperation among different countries is needed to tackle the challenge. Each country's pharmaceutical industry has its own characteristic. Therefore, an appropriate way complementing each other's advantages and enabling mutual development should be taken.
Wu said, great efforts should be made to establish a mechanism for international pharmacopeia cooperation and coordination, to intensify the communication and cooperation in the aspect of drug standards and to hold regular international pharmacopeia symposiums. Wu called for that, more international and national drug standard organizations should be invited to the symposium to make the symposium an internationally influential symposium on drug standards.
During the symposium, experts and scholars from the ChP and the USP and the officials and experts from the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare (EDQM), the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), the German Federal Agency for Sera and Vaccines(PEI), the British Pharmacopoeia Commission (BP), the Federal Service on Surveillance in Healthcare and Social Development of the Russian Federation, the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia Committee, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, the Indonesian Pharmacopoeia Commission and the Cuban Ministry of Health, under the theme of drug standards and quality control of Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) & biologics, gave their speeches on the topics of drug regulations, policies and technical requirements of different countries, current situations and development tendency of quality control, product safety control and standard formulation, shared their experience in drug standards and quality control with each other and made discussions on further cooperation and development in the field of drug standards.
