Indian main stock index Sensex opened at 17,961.58 points Thursday, 4.21 points higher from previous close of 17,957.37 points on weak performance in surrounding bourses.
The index gained 5.73 points or 0.03 percent after 28 minutes of trading in the morning session.
State-owned companies, health care and automobile sectors inched up 1.65 percent, 0.65 percent and 0.34 percent, respectively.
Home loan provider HDFC, aluminum maker Hindalco, drug maker CIPLA and automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki grew 1.72 percent, 1.01 percent, 0.79 percent and 0.37 percent.
Meanwhile, technological, IT and capital goods sectors dipped 0.41 percent, 0.34 percent and 0.18 percent, with software outsourcing players Infosys and WIPRO down 0.65 percent and 0.46 percent, respectively.
