Spain: MARM reiterates its support for banana transporters

The Minister for Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM), Rosa Aguilar, met with the President and representatives of the Canarias Banana Growers Association (ASPROCAN). Meeting in which she has reiterated the commitment of the MARM with the banana sector, to support the viability of production taking into account the reduction of import tariff agreed at international level.
The Minister expressed the willingness of MARM to continue working together with French and Portuguese authorities and the European producer sector, to achieve an improvement in supports for communitarian plantains; and from Canary Islands in particular, to address the impact that might result from the reduction of the only tariff that is applied to imports of Latin American banana.
In this regard, she informed about the negotiations conducted with the Commissioner of Agricultural and Rural Development of the European Commission regarding the improvement of the aid contained in the POSEI to maintain the competitiveness of the European banana sector compared to imported products.
She has also highlighted the will of the Ministry to implement the aid for banana transportation from the Canary Islands to the mainland; in conditions that are contemplated in the rules relating to subsidies of freight transport from Canary Islands to the Peninsula.
In the meeting, the sectors problem has been identified and the need to work together and get real results to maintain the viability of the banana sector in the Canaries.
