The city's subway operator is considering adding more safety doors along the tracks at subway stations to improve passenger safety, according to a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Shanghai Committee.
CPPCC Shanghai Committee member Cao Zhengwen, also a senior editor at Shanghai Evening News, said Sunday that Shanghai Metro Group, which operates the city's subway, responded to a request made by Cao earlier this year in January.
He asked for the added safety measure to be implemented at more stations after cases of people falling into the tracks surfaced last year.
"Subway authorities said that they are discussing the possibility of adding more safety doors to other stations, but they didn't provide further details," he told the Global Times Sunday.
Currently, the subway group is installing extra safety doors at busy stations along the Line 1,3,4 and 6 subways.
The doors are aimed at protecting riders from slipping on to the tracks by only allowing them access to the area once trains have pulled up and come to a complete stop.
Such doors are already in place at frequented stations such as Xujiahui station along the Line 1 subway.
The Global Times failed to reach Shanghai Metro Group Sunday.
