On July 3rd 2006, the Yellow River's fifth round of sediment-water regulation accomplished, which had sent a maximum flow of 3,700 cubic meters per second into the sea in Shandong's LiJin City.
During the 19-day implementation of the sediment-water regulation, artificial density current as the key link had been made successfully. Compared with the regulation of last year, the discharge, this year, has increased slightly, in order to scour the river bed more effectively. The water used during this regulation comes from Wanjiazhai, Sanmenxia and Xiaolangdi reservoirs water storage above the safe water level for the flood season .As the downstream channel was scoured, 601 million tons sediment had been sent to the sea. Since 2002, Yellow River Conservancy Commission has begun to launch the water and sediment regulation in the Yellow River. It is to artificially control the flood to scour the river channel. After 4 experiments of regulation, the river channel in Shandong has become lower 0.86 m averagely. It is favorable for enlarging the flood discharging capacity.
The Yellow River's fifth round of sediment-water regulation furthered our understanding about the laws of water and sediment movement of the Yellow River, explored the feasibilities of coordinating water-sediment relations though artificial regulation of the flood peak, sediment content and sediment grading,which provided us with a new avenue to harnessing the sediment of the Yellow River though fully utilizing the force of the nature.
