China beat Wales 2-1 in the seventh-position playoff at the Algarve cup women's football tournament on Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Zhang Yanru made a couple of fantastic saves including a penalty as China staved off a late onslaught by Wales.

"Her performance was awesome, China need a keeper like her to win," said Wales head coach Jarmo Matikainen.

China, who lost all their group games, went ahead in the third minute when striker You Jia surprised Wales goalkeeper Rhian Nokes with a low shot.

You set up another in the 54th minute with a deft curled pass to help midfielder Gu Yasha made it 2-0.

Wales suddenly became dangerous from then on, forcing Zhang Yanru to make some super saves. But she also made a mistake in the 57th minute when she stood rather far off the goalline, and was left helpless to see Wales forward Helen Lander lobbed the ball in.

In the 86th minute, Zhang dashed Wales' hope to equalise after she saved Emma Jones's penalty.

This is the sole win for China in the Algarve cup, and head coach Li Xiaopeng was worried about his side's inconsistency.

"Sometimes my players' performance was world-class, sometimes, they seemed to be a group of amateurs. They need to grow up," he said.
