Competing against designers from top design schools, 2011 FIT Graduate Jusil Carroll of South Korea has taken the top prize of $10,000 in Supima's Annual Design Competition.
Along with FIT Graduate Amy Lee Bittner of Evansville, Indiana, Carroll was among eight finalists -- two each from each of the graduating classes of the Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, and Savannah College of Art and Design.
Each finalist created an integrated capsule collection consisting of five pieces of women s eveningwear using premium denim, shirting, and jersey supplied by Supima from the cotton brand's top international mill partners. Finalists were judged on the originality and execution of their garments.
The designers presented their collections in a runway finale hosted by Rachel Zoe during Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. The show also was streamed live. Jusil Carroll was named the winner by Zoe at the finale.
Judges included Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, founder of the Gilt Groupe; Coco Rocha, model and entrepreneur; Kevin Harter, vice president of men's fashion, Bloomingdale s; Nicole Miller, designer; Charlotte Ronson, designer and DJ; and Buxton Midyette, vice president of marketing for Supima.
Carroll was a recipient of last year s $25,000 CFDA Liz Claiborne Design Scholarship. She also placed first in the 2011 AFT International Fashion Sketch Contest and won a SUNY Chancellor s Award for Student Excellence. Her faculty mentor for the Supima Design Competition was Lisa Donofrio.
