Wool Week, the largest celebration of wool in the UK, will be held from September 5 to 11 this year. The Wool Week intends to help consumers understand the durability, eco-friendliness and versatility of wool, while supporting the communities that produce it.
Participants in the 2011 edition of the Wool Week will be imparted hands-on advice and professional knitting techniques from Rowan, the expert knitters.
This year s event will also include a Love Wool class hosted by John Lewis Liverpool. The participants in the class will be encouraged to knit a square, which will then be patched together by Rowan Design Consultants to make blankets. These blankets will then be donated to Marie Curie Hospices in Liverpool, for the use of patients and their families.
Participation in the Love Wool class can be either to improve one s knitting skills, or to learn new knitting techniques, or simply for promoting the use of wool.
The Wool Week is held as a part of the Campaign for Wool started by the Prince of Wales in 2008. The Campaign was designed to promote the use of wool in the wake of declining sheep numbers in the UK. It was aimed to save the wool industry, at a time when the new oil-based and man-made synthetic fibres was increasing at the cost of wool.
