Rural women inaugurate apparels expo

Write: Malkah [2011-08-20]
Rural women artisans have inaugurated an expo of apparels and other items for women and children at Islamabad.
Around 100 items related to women and children such as garments, handbags, dresses and home furnishings are being showcased at the expo which provides visitors with a chance to choose from a wide range of products.
Items prepared by rural women are showcased at the expo by Behbud Association, an NGO which works for empowerment of women and the society by furthering facilities like education, health, vocational training and also providing means of livelihood.
Prior to the exhibition, the artisans were imparted training at the vocational centres so as to enable them to prepare items that well match the current fashion trend and thereby generate better returns by attracting good sales.
Vocational trainers get support from industrial homes throughout Pakistan thereby enhancing livelihood prospects for low-income families by providing them employment in areas of garment manufacturing and traditional embroidery work, which are given a modern touch to upgrade them into present-day designs.
Behbud has also established a `Shop for a cause to help women from slum areas become self-reliant. It even makes other members of the community understand regarding gender and other social issues as well as the training provided by it in technical and marketing skills.
