Leading telecommunications solutions provider Huawei launched the world's first 7-inch Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet on Monday in a drive to grow its device sales.
The MediaPad with Qualcomm's dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and a 7-inch IPS (In Plane Switching) capacitive touchscreen is designed to be a smart, slim and light tablet that tries to combine portability with performance such as entertainment, said Victor Xu, chief strategy and marketing officer of Huawei Device.
It is 10.5 mm thin and weighs 390 g. It also comes with a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5 megapixel auto-focus rear- facing camera with HD video recording capabilities. Pre-installed applications include Facebook, Twitter, Let's Golf and Document to Go.
Xu said the product is supported by Huawei's fast-growing solution store Hi-Space and the Google Android Market.
Huawei has previously launched its 7-inch tablet Ideos S7 and its updated version S7 slim.
The new product is expected to be in the market in months.
Xu said Huawei is aiming to be one of the leading consumer electronic brands in telecommunications and that it has selected the 7-inch product as its main target due to its portability. The tablet will also be the brain of the intelligent house in the future and Huawei is trying to offer solutions to meet the demand.
"In terms of the tablet market, we are positioning ourselves as an innovator, not a follower," he said.
Huawei Device, which accounted for about one sixth of the operations at Huawei, has more than 5,000 research and development staff, he said.
The company has recently started exploring the device market aggressively with the launch of its own smart phones.
Xu said the value of the tablet market is expected to surge to more than 80 billion U.S. dollars by 2015 from the current 9.6 billion U.S. dollars.
