Xinjiang establishes first general bonded area

Write: Efrem [2011-06-15]
The Alataw Pass General Bonded Area, the first general bonded area in Xinjiang province, has been established as the 16th general bonded area in China. Approved by the Chinese State Council on May 30, 2011, the project only took seven months to pass through the approval procedure, reflecting the government's strong support of Xinjiang economic development.
As China's biggest overland port, the Alataw Pass Port of the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang province has developed into a comprehensive port from a desert wasteland. Last year, in the Alataw Pass Port, the amount of shipping cargo reached 25 million tons and the values of import and export both exceeded 10 billion, making up 90 percent, 69 percent and 89 percent of the total amounts in Xinjing Province, respectively.
The overland port has played an indispensable role in China's energy import from Central Asia and the West Asia and helped Xinjiang province to be more open to the West in developing its local economy.
