The Philips (China) Investment Co., Ltd. will recall 1.76 million foldable hairdryers from May 31 due to an overheating malfunction that may pose a fire risk, China's Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said Tuesday.
The AQSIQ said in an online statement that the hairdryer can become overheated if it is left plugged into an electrical outlet, even if the appliance is switched off. This overheating can lead to fires in extreme cases, the AQSIQ said.
As a precaution, Philips is voluntarily recalling and replacing three foldable hairdryer models. These models include HP4930, HP4931 and HP4940 models produced between January 2008 to January 2011, the statement said.
Philips will offer free replacement hairdryers to customers who bring in the recalled hairdryers, the statement said.
