Write: Pancho [2011-05-23]

Genghis Khan was an outstanding military strategist and statesman of Mongolian. After uniting and organizing fragmented Mongol tribes, he was named supreme leader of the Mongols in 1206. Having forged a Mongol nation, Genghis Khan turned to bloody military campaigns to conquer other countries and his territory extended to Central Asia and South Russia. In 1226, Genghis Khan led army to subjugate the kingdom of Xixia in which he died of disease the next year. When the Yuan Dynasty was founded, Genghis Khan was conferred posthumously as Emperor Taizu.

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan is located in Erdos City, 185 km (115 miles) south of Baotou City. However, the Mausoleum actually is not the real burial place of Genghis Khan, but rather, a cenotaph. According to Khan s will, he was buried without any markings. The real burial place still remains a mystery to this day. In 1954, the Mausoleum was built by the Chinese Government in traditional Mongolian style. It serves as a sacred gathering place for people to commemorate and offer sacrifice to their hero.

The Mausoleum covers an area of fifty thousand square kilometers (21236 square miles). The main structure is three palaces, shaped like Mongolian yurts, and corridors that link the palaces. The whole construction is magnificent with strong Mongolian ethnic style.
The main structures of the mausoleum are three grand halls, which are shaped like Mongolian yurts, and the corridors which link the three halls. In the middle is the Main Hall, which is also the Memorial Hall. In the center of this stands a white marble statue of Genghis Khan with a height of over 4 meters (around 13 feet). Behind the statue is the map of the vast territory of the Yuan Dynasty. On either side of the Main Hall are the East Hall and the West Hall. In the East Hall, coffins of one of Genghis Khan's wives and his fourth son are laid. In the West Hall, Genghis Khan's arms are exhibited. Along the corridors frescos depict the life of Genghis Khan and the great deeds of his grandson-Kubla Khan, who was as great as his grandfather.
In the hall behind the Main Hall there are four biers covered with bright yellow satin. They are said to be the coffins of Genghis Khan and his three wives. There are also two coffins of Genghis Khan's brothers.
In addition, tourists can taste delicious Mongolian barbecue, and enjoy a Mongolian-style dance and horse performance. You can even take part in the dance, horse riding, arrow shooting, and wrestling. All these activities enhance the tourists' travel experience.
