People go to Lantau Island to get away from the city and enjoy the outdoors.

History

Hong Kong Disneyland is the Walt Disney Company’s fifth Disneyland resort. In 1998, the Walt Disney Company and the government of Hong Kong announced their intention to construct it. It is the company’s second Asian resort. One was built earlier in Tokyo. The resort first opened in 2005, but the resort didn’t draw as many visitors as the company expected, and the company has been losing money.

Ocean Park on Hong Kong Island remained Hong Kong’s favorite theme park, and it attracts mainland Chinese and younger people with new thrill rides and cheaper tickets. The three new theme lands that are set to open in 2014 called Grizzly Trail, Mystic Point, and Toy Story Land will increase the total completed area only a little.

New accommodations are planned to add to the 1,000 rooms in the two Disney luxury hotels.

Touring Activities

  1. Enjoy the rides and the fantasy park.
  2. Relax in the resort facilities.
  3. Hike and enjoy the outdoors on the nearby mountain trails and beaches.
  4. Go to the Inspiration Lake Resort Center for strolls in the park, exercise, and fun on the water.
  5. If you want to go to modern Las Vegas-style resorts, Macau is not far away by ferry.

Travel Essentials

1) Location: Next to Discovery Bay and the North Lantau Highway on the western shore of Lantau Island.

Hong Kong Disneyland’s location provides some benefits that the other Disneylands don’t provide. One benefit is that transportation is quick and convenient. It is on the western side of Lantau Island and is about 12 kilometers away from Hong Kong International Airport. The resort is on the MTR subway lines between the airport and the city. Hong Kong constructed a special Disney MTR line for the resort. This makes travel convenient and quick. Another benefit of the location is that undeveloped land and coastal area is available for future expansion.

2) How to go there: There is a special MTR line that was made especially for the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort to connect the resort with the Hong Kong International Airport and the Tung Chung Station that serves it. The Tung Chung Station is the terminus for an MTR line that connects the airport to the city. The special MTR line is distinctive because there are only two stations on it at Sunny Bay and the resort and because the cars have Disney décor with Mickey Mouse windows. The special line makes travel convenient and quick. Passengers taking the Airport Express can access to the Disneyland Resort by changing to the Tung Chung Line at Tsing Yi Station, and alighting at Sunny Bay Station for the Disneyland Resort Line.

From Hong Kong Station that is under the tall International Finance Center that is between Man Cheung Street and Harbour View Street, take the Tung Chung MTR and get off at Tung Chung Station. Travel takes about 35 or 40 minutes. Then walk over to the Sunny Bay station and get on the Disney line.

3) Operating Hours: Monday to Friday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. Weekends 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. During holidays, the park hours may vary.

4) Tickets: Prices vary depending on the day or season.

In the small area around the bay are four of the world’s tallest buildings. You can see the old British architecture at Hong Kong Park and at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Hong Kong Park and Hong Kong Botanical and Zoological Gardens are unusually good and free public parks and zoos that are also within walking distance in Central.

Hong Kong has two other theme parks. The most popular theme park in Hong Kong is called Ocean Park. It is on the southern shore of Hong Kong Island, and it is close to Central District. Noah’s Ark is the newest theme park. It is on the small island of Ma Wan off Lantau Island very close to the Disneyland resort. One of the biggest bridges in the world that connects Ma Wan with Tsing Yi on the mainland of Hong Kong is called Hong Kong Tsing Ma Bridge. It is a tourist destination in itself. You can see the bridge from Noah’s Ark since it is next to the resort.
