Two old wells dug out in Shunjing Street may be the Xiangquan Spring

Two old stone-wells were dug out by an unauthorized construction organization in Shunjing Street. Clear water still gushes from one of them, thus some have speculated that this is the lost Xiangquan Spring .

Zhang Huasong, vice president of Jinan Academy of Social Sciences, said that the Xiangquan Spring was recorded early in the Famous Spring Stele of the Jin Dynasty, as the 29th spring of the seventy-two famous springs, and located in the west of Shunjing taking its name from its sweet fragrance. Research shows that Shunjing originally included East Shunjing and West Shunjing home of the Xiangquan Spring .

In the mid of 1970s, the Shunci ancestral temple was reconstructed into No. 65 Middle School and the Xiangquan Spring was buried under the structure. East Shunjing was also buried until the Shunjing Commercial Street was built in 1985.

Wang Xinsheng who has made an extensive study of famous Jinan springs said that many famous old springs were lost or buried for various reasons. While Jinan government applied for relics about springs, the beat way is to restore those old springs and show Jinan s long history in spring culture.
