To become the largest ever urban renewal project in Guangzhou, 138 urban villages throughout the city will be renovated by the end of 2020, including 52 ones to be demolished in entirety and 86 ones to be completely renovated, announced Guangzhou Urban Renewal Office executive director Ding Qiang on January 6.

Since the urban renewal plan was drawn up in 2009, renovation proposals for 15 urban villages have been reviewed and approved. The apartment blocks at Leide Village for resettled residents have been completed, Linhe and Pazhou Villages have been demolished, leveling works have been finished for the first phase of Yangji and Xiaoxintang Villages, and demolition is currently underway at Xian Village; in addition, the compensation and relocation scheme for residents at Sanyuanli and other villages has been finalized, and the Huangpu Ancient Village and preservation-focused renovation has begun at Yu'anwei Village.

Moreover, 38 run-down workshop renovation projects throughout the city have been approved, involving 191.34 hectares of land, including four public land plots of 13.92 hectares, 13 owner-renovated plots of 47.74 hectares, 10 publicly-auditioned plots of 84.74 hectares, and 11 currently-processed plots of 44.96 hectares. The renovation scheme for the run-down workshops was officially published on December 31, 2010, and will be considered by the Planning Committee in the coming days and is expected to be finalized before the Lunar New Year.

With regard to land plots approved in previous years, according to Mr. Ding, in the coming two years, their boundaries will be surveyed and renovation schemes will be drawn up. This will also be a priority of this year's urban renewal work.
