Police unveiled a package of measures including encouraging drivers to snapshot traffic rule offenders with mobile phones and videotape traffic accidents to help relieve traffic jams and ensure smooth traffic.
Under the new measures, drivers involved in minor accidents will not necessarily sign a letter of responsibility as they did before. Instead they can take photos as evidence before driving to roadsides to solve disputes.
Traffic police will snapshot an accident with remote control cameras and guide drivers to nearby joint offices of police and insurance companies to settle disputes through phone or text messaging, Xu Wei, spokesman of the traffic police bureau told a news conference yesterday.
Police will adopt zero tolerance to violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), illegally changing lanes, occupying bus lanes, speeding, overloading and running against red lights.
Starting next week, police will launch a special campaign on violations of pedestrians, bicycle riders and electric bikers.
The fatalities caused by pedestrian violations in Shenzhen had accounted for one-third of traffic deaths last year, according to Xu.
The city is facing unprecedented traffic pressure because of a 20 percent increase of cars year on year. Vehicles registered in the city had reached 174,000 by Monday.
