Rail project causes cave-in in Shenzhen

The cave-in in a residential area in Futian District.

Construction of a tunnel on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway line caused a cave-in in the Zhongkang residential area in Xiameilin, Futian District of Shenzhen, on Sunday morning.

The cave-in at the football pitch in the residential area is about 7-8 meters deep and 3 meters in diameter.

More than 60 apartments in nearby buildings have been evacuated for safety reasons.

It is lucky the cave-in happened in the morning, and there was nobody on the grass at the time, otherwise the consequences are hard to imagine, a resident, Liu, said.

According to the contractor, the cave-in was caused by the erosion of sand by drainage water in the tunnel, which is 30 meters underground. The contractor has now filled it in and is monitoring nearby buildings to ensure safety.

Work on the tunnel has been halted.
