Where can we go if strong earthquake hits Guangzhou? According to Hong Jianshuang, Deputy Director General of Guangzhou Earthquake Office, Guangzhou has built five earthquake emergency shelters, another two are under construction.

The five built shelters are Xiaogang Park (in Haizhu District), Dongfeng Park (in Tianhe District), Chen Clan Academy Plaza (in Liwan District), Panyu Nanqu Park (in Panyu District) and Zengcheng Plaza (in Zengcheng City). The five shelters can accommodate 200,000 people.

The two new shelters will finish construction in this April or May. They are Huadu Plaza (in Huadu District) and Huangpu Sports Center (in Huangpu District), and can accommodate 300,000 people.

According to Liang Gan, Deputy Director General of Guangdong Earthquake Bureau, the earthquake emergency shelters in Guangzhou are all equipped with tents, foods, daily necessities, water, power, medical service, telecommunication, security, epidemic prevention and emergency management units. The emergency materials are stored in responsible departments, organizations and companies. Once the emergency response plan starts, the related teams will provide related materials to the shelters.

These seven shelters can accommodate a total of 500000 people, however, Guangzhou has a 10 million plus population. How to find places for all the residents? Hong Jianshuang explained that not all the residents will need long time accommodation after earthquake. After the magnitude 9 massive earthquake in Friday, Japan had accommodated about 200,000 people in emergency shelters. So these seven shelters are enough for Guangzhou.
