Guangdong tackles labor shortage

The country's leading economic powerhouse, the Pearl River Delta Region, is reporting a shortfall of two million workers.

In cities such as Dongguan and Guangzhou, where a great number of exporters are based, there are nearly 200 thousand vacancies.

To help companies find workers, Guangdong province is holding job fairs in other areas and plans to transfer 100 thousand people from less developed regions.

This job fair is being held in Yufu, a city in the northwest of Guangdong province. Nearly 200 companies from Dongguang, Foshan and other cities in the Pearl River Delta are hoping to find recruits. They are posting 15 thousand jobs, mostly in digital control, electronics, mechanical, assembly and maintenance, with salaries of more than 1,500 yuan a month.

Employer, Foshan Company, said, "The cost of labor here is a little bit cheaper."

Employer, Dongguan Company, said, "There are more workers here. And salaries for workers are a little bit lower."

Huang Cuiling has just graduated from college. She is enquiring about Dongguang companies, hoping to find an office position in a trading company.

Huang Cuiling, College Graduate, said, "I want to work in Dongguan. Now Dongguan companies have come here to hire, it saves me some trouble."

Employer, Dongguan Company, said, "We have received many resumes and we will make some choices. The salary for the position is about 1,600 yuan a month."

Guangdong province will hold similar job fairs in 20 cities over the next few weeks, in a bid to boost cooperation between less-developed regions and the Pearl River Delta.
