Petroleum chemist HOU Xianglin, 96, passes away


Prof. HOU Xianglin (HOU Hsianglin), a CAS Member and pioneer of China's refining technology, died on 8 December in Beijing.
Prof. Hou was born in 1912 in Guangdong. He graduated from Yanjing University in 1935, and received his PhD from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1948.
After returning to his motherland, Prof. Hou and his co-workers solved many key problems in oil industry to promote the development of China's oil refining and achieved China's self-sufficient supply of the main oil products. He also solved key problems in obtaining jet fuel and special lubricants used in new technology. He was a long-term organizer of China's scientific institutions in petroleum industry.
