Located in the northwestern part of Beijing and enjoying fresh water and air, Haidian District is endowed with fascinating natural surroundings. With beautiful mountains, clear rivers and the luxuriant vegetation of grass and trees, it is justifiabl dubbed the lung of Beijing or the natural air-conditioner . The district was intentionally constructed to be ecologically well-balanced in natural and living conditions.

One remarkable achievement Haidian has recorded is its luxuriant vegetation of grass and trees. By the end of 2004, the vegetation coverage in the district amounted to 2,224.5 hectares, boasting a coverage rate of 46.9%, the highest among all the eight districts in the city and the per capita coverage stood at 13.2 m2.

Due to more rigious control on car emissions, air pollution in the district has been reduced drastically. The rate of days with air quality assessed at Level-2 and higher is above the city average. Noise levels are also well managed. The average noise level in Haidian district is 53.2 db, below the lower limit of the city s standard range: 56 62 db. The average noise level on main traffic lanes is 67.9 db, again below the lower limit of the city s standard range: 68 -74 db.
