The 798 Art Zone is located in the northeast part of Beijing City, it is named after a factory, which was built in the 1950s. It was once occupied by some state-owned enterprises such as 798 Factory, Beijing North China Wireless Joint Equipment Factory, and so on. It covers an area of more than 600,000 square meters, and from east to west it starts from Jiuxianqiao Road(酒仙桥路) and ends at Beijing—Baotou Railway. It covers Jiuxianqiao North Road in its north and ends in Jiangtai Road.
As the factory was designed by some German experts, it had an architecture style, which was called “Bauhaus” (Its main design ideal is bringing the technical and aesthetic property of new materials and new structure into effect; designing simply and composing pictures vividly with flexibility). Attracted by the unique architectural style and vast spaces, more and more artists and designers began to trickle in and settle their workshops there since 2001.
They make full use of its original style and transform them into unique art exhibition centers and creation workshops. Now Beijing 798 Art Zone gathers a number of celebrities of art and culture in fashion. Many international art exhibitions are held there. It has received extensive attention from all over the world in recent years.
Now it is one of the landmarks of Beijing Urban Culture.
Walking in the 798 Art Zone, visitors can feel the contrast of the present with the past. On one side are the mottled redbrick walls with slogans of different ages; on another side are the scattered orderly industrial plants and crisscross pipelines. Uniformed workers and fashion visitors on the street form unique scenery. History and reality, industry and the arts perfectly merge together there. This is the 798 Art Zone.
It takes nearly 40 minutes for a rough visit to the 798 Art Zone. At present, there are more than 100 cultural institutions within one square kilometer, including publishing houses, architecture design companies, clothes design companies, interior design companies, music and movie producing companies, artist studios, etc. Besides these cultural institutions, there are clubs, restaurants, bookstores, yoga centers, etc.
