Chinese vendor has lofty ambitions in handset space; Q1 shipments included 2 million data cards.

ZTE on Wednesday revealed that it shipped 10 million mobile terminal products, including handsets and data cards, in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 30% over the same period last year.

However, the Chinese vendor has some way to go to hit its targets.

Speaking to journalists in Shenzhen last month, ZTE reiterated plans to become one of the world's top five handset vendors within three years, adding that it is aiming for 100 million shipments per year by the same date.

"Our [shipments] target for 2009 is 60 million," a ZTE executive said at the event.

"Within five years we are targeting to be a top three vendor," he added.

The ambitious vendor on Wednesday announced that 68% of its Q1 shipments went to markets outside of China.

Its total shipments included 2.5 million CDMA handsets worldwide, a figure ZTE said exceeded its total CDMA shipments for the whole of 2008, and over 2 million data cards. ZTE shipped a total of 10 million data cards last year.
