The Wenchuan earthquake has caused damage of various degrees to CNPC's oil and gas fields, refineries and marketing companies based in Sichuan, Chongqing, Shaanxi and Gansu. By 8:30pm on May 18, five CNPC employees had been killed, while 44 were wounded and 10 were missing. Altogether, 908 service stations have suffered losses and 65 stopped operations. In addition, 47 oil depots, 165 stations in oil and gas fields, one purification plant, and 71 oil/gas pipelines suffered damage. According to initial estimates, the quake has caused losses totaling RMB 1.78 billion for CNPC.
Jiang Jiemin, president of CNPC and head of the CNPC earthquake rescue leading group, emphasized that an all-out effort must be made to ensure adequate supplies of oil products for the areas hit by the quake, search for the missing, provide support for quake-hit areas, and bring production back to normal to minimize losses caused by the disaster.
