HONG KONG: Total visitor arrivals to Hong Kong from Feb 13 to 19, dubbed as the Chinese New Year Golden Week, reached 782,163, up 16.9 percent over the same period last year, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced Saturday.
Out of the total arrivals, those from the Chinese Mainland took up more than 70 percent, said the board
In particular, Mainland arrivals surged to 102,849 on Feb 16, the third day of the Lunar New Year, setting a new record of Mainland arrivals in a single day.
In addition to the Mainland, robust growth was also recorded for other short- and long-haul markets.
HKTB's provisional figures showed that the cumulative visitor arrivals from Jan 1 to Feb 19 have already surpassed 5 million, reaching a new historic high.
"We are greatly encouraged by the arrivals gain during the Chinese New Year. We believe the increase could mainly be attributed to the stabilizing global economy, which has revived consumers' sentiments to travel," said HKTB Chairman James Tien.
