Police from Guangzhou and Shenzhen yesterday handed out brochures at MOI Department Store in Huaqiangbei, Futian District, to publicize a second trial of traffic control restrictions from Sept. 11 to 14 in Guangzhou.
During this period, Guangzhou will allow private cars with even and odd license plates to drive on alternate days.
Offenders will be fined 200 yuan (US$30) and have three points deducted. Vehicles that occupy special lanes for Asian Games will be fined 150 yuan.
Drawing a lesson from a previous rehearsal in July, restrictions had been lifted on some expressway links including West No. 2 Ring Road, North No. 2 Ring Road, Guangqing (Guangzhou-Qingyuan) Expressway (northern part of North No. 2 Ring Road), Guanghui (Guangzhou-Huizhou) Expressway, Guangshen (Guangzhou-Shenzhen) Expressway, Humen Expressway, and Nansha Port Express Link.
Drivers from outside Guangzhou who did not know of the restrictions would not be affected, police said.
The first trial was widely criticized by drivers from outside Guangzhou because they were not aware of the restrictions. Of the total number of offenders during the four-day trial in July, 70 percent were owners of vehicles registered outside Guangzhou.
The traffic restrictions were designed for the Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou in November.
