The University of Hong Kong (HKU) should complete a new campus in Shenzhen in 2013, according to Roland T. Chin, HKU s deputy vice chancellor and provost.

The university was considering which faculties would be transferred to the Shenzhen campus, said the professor, who took office in September after leaving the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

According to proposals, the university s Faculty of Engineering would be the first to relocate to the new campus, followed by the Faculty of Business and Economics, the Daily Sunshine reported yesterday.

The university was in the process of raising funds and was in talks with the Shenzhen Municipal Government on issues such as campus operation, Chin said.

An agreement between the university and the government was expected to be reached next year.

The Shenzhen campus would be approximately one hour s drive from the Hong Kong campus, Chin said.

Chin said the Shenzhen government hoped the university could assist in the operation of Binhai Hospital, now under construction.

However, the university would not relocate the entire medical faculty to Shenzhen, he said.

HKU planned to recruit 200 professors before 2012, more than 110 of whom had already been recruited, according to the report.

One-third of the newly recruited professors were non-Chinese, Chin said.

Economic difficulties in Europe and the United States had made it easy for the university to attract professors, Chin said.

HKU had climbed the university world rankings in recent years, according to the report.
