Law firm will appeal to a higher authority

A law firm in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, plans to lodge a protest with the provincial procuratorate after losing an appeal over a local court ordering it to pay 65,400 yuan ($9,861) in compensation and return 4,000 yuan in fees to a client, after it failed to help him settle a financial dispute.

The client surnamed Chen gave 62,900 yuan to his girlfriend in 2001 after they reached an agreement that she would return the money if she wanted to leave him.

In 2003, he discovered she was already married. They broke up and he was forced to take legal measures to get his money back.

The case was then delayed when the judge went on leave and the woman sold a property that he had taken a court order out on before the warrant had been issued.

Chen sued the court in 2007 for its negligence in handling the case. After the court proved that Chen's lawyer was the responsible party, Chen sought further redress through the courts.
