Students of ECUST Talk with Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry

Undergraduate sophomores of the Sino-French Joint Project of ECUST had a free talk with Professor Jane Mali Ryan, the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry and the academician of French Academy of Sciences, in the France Alsace region Pavilion at the World Expo site in Shanghai, on October 30th , 2010.

The students asked Professor Ryan a series of questions concerning life, learning, chemistry, failure and success and other issues. The witty, sharp and philosophical answers from Professor Ryan benefit the students a lot. Professor Ryan responded that, since life is limited, one should have a clear mind on what is important to him, and then learn to make a wise choice and that although it is dangerous to do anything, people will still pursue it.

For example, people get electric shock when touch the sockets, but they will still use electricity; it is the same case with chemistry. He also commented that since chemical materials are toxic and will explode, one needs to learn to guard against them and that one should not be discouraged when fails, and persists until he succeeds, but at the same time he should make sure that he is on the right track, if he s on the wrong track, he must correct it.
