Peking University, Beijing, Nov 30, 2009: On Nov 28, the School of Public Health, Peking University, launched the AIDS Awareness Week of this year.
The launch ceremnoy was attended by Chairman of Chinese Foundation of Prevention of STD and AIDS Mr. Liu Xiaping, Doctor Xing Yan from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention of Haidian District, Professor Hu Yonghua, Vice Dean of the School of Public Health, PKU, Jiao Yan, Vice Secretary of the Communist Youth League of the Medical Science Center, PKU, and student representatives.
To begin with, Wang Qingbo, Chairman of the Student Union of the School introduced the major activities of the campaign, including bringing knowledge of AIDS and its prevention to migrant workers and other universities and visiting AIDS patients, with the hope to help the public understand and care for the AIDS patients, instead of holding prejudice or discrimination against them.
In review of the campaign activities in the past years, Vice Secretary Jiao Yan commented that the campaign activities had made huge progress with innovations over the years.
Prof. Hu Yonghua expressed his wishes that students should shoulder their responsibilities by learning how to prevent AIDS and spreading knowledge of AIDS prevention.
Mr. Liu Xiaping introduced the latest data of AIDs, some basic means to prevent AIDS, and the work done by the Foundation. He also expressed his willingness to keep working with the School of Public Health to launch campaigns to increase public awareness of AIDS.
Over the past 6 years, the AIDS Awareness Week has become one of the most important and largest programs of the School of Public Health. It has attracted celebrities from various sectors of the society to participate and aroused enthusiasm among college students in Beijing in the AIDS awareness campaigns.
