We are honored to announce that Jianwai SOHO commended The International Highrise Award 2006 for its innovative typology. According to the evaluation jury, The Jianwai SOHO project is being given a commendation in recognition of its innovative typology, which goes well beyond the customary Beijing block.
Jianwai SOHO has a gross floor area of 700,000 square meters. It is composed of 18 apartment buildings, 2 office buildings, 4 villas, 400 stores, 364 suites of offices, 2069 apartments and 16 streets. The construction of the project started in 2002 and is due to be completed in October 2007. Jianwai SOHO is developed by SOHO China and designed by Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto. According to Mr. Yamamoto, his inspiration for Jianwai SOHO came form a Moroccan city called Ceuta. I would like to build Jianwai SOHO into a place with alleys running between buildings. I do not want to call it a street block because it is not a closed, monotonous space, but rather an open place with department buildings, stores and offices in it.
The International Highrise Award was established in 2003. Deutsches Architektur Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt, which initiated and organizes the prize, will open a major high-rise exhibition entitled High Society on November 18, 2006. The focus will be on the winner of the International High-Rise Prize and the projects commended by the jury.
The 2006 Prize is part of a cooperative agreement between the City of Franfurt/Main and DekaBank running through 2008. To be considered, submissions must be a completed building that is at least 100 meters tall, displays pioneering design, innovative technology, cost efficiency, and is meaningfully embedded in the urban fabric. The Prize is awarded to both the architect(s) and developer(s) of high-rise buildings.
