In the 18th ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Plenipotentiary Conference held in Veracruz, Mexico on 4-22 October 2010, Zhao Houling, alumus of NUPT and honorary dean of the NUPT's College of Telecommunication and Information Engineering, was elected Deputy Secretary-General of ITU again with 155 votes. Mr Zhao's election will enbale him, in the next 4 years, to continue to lead ITU in breaking new grounds in the global information industry. It also presents an potential boost for China's information industry in the global arena.
Mr Zhao Houling graduated in 1975 from the Wired Telecommunication Department of NUPT. He was recruited by ITU as a Staff member of CCITT (Consultative Committee of International Telegraph and Telephone) IN 1986, becoming the first chinese to work for the organization in its history of more than 100 years. In 1988, He was elected Director of TSB (Telecommunication Standardization Beaureau ) of ITU, becoming the first non-European national to head the beaureau in its history of more than 130 years, which at the same time made him the first Chinese executive of ITU. In 2002, he was reelected director of the beaureau. The 17th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in 2006 elected Mr Zhao Deputy Secretary-General of ITU, the highest post ever held by chineseChinese nationals in ITU.
