Dr. Walker Smith visiting Jinan University

Dr. Walker Smith, a professor from Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, College of William and Mary, USA, visited Jinan University from 7 September to 13 October, 2010.
Dr. Smith is one of the world famous professors in marine ecology. His research interests are the factors to affect growth and photosynthesis of marine phytoplankton in upper layers, interactive mechanisms of organic and inorganic carbon. In recent years, his major works are in the carbon cycle in Ross Sea, Antarctic, as well as Phaeocystis blooms. He has published many scientific papers on distinguished journals of Science, Nature Polar Oceanography Limnol. Oceanogr Deep-Sea Res.

During the five weeks visit, Dr. Smith had broad academic exchanges with staff in Research Center for Harmful Algae and Aquatic Environment of Jinan University. Dr. Smith gave a lecture of Marine Ecology to freshmen postgraduate students. As a co-organizer, Dr. Smith helped organize an International Workshop on Phaeocystis and other Harmful Algae.

Totally 60 scientists and students attended the workshop, and 15 oral presentations were delivered. Dr. Smith also contributed a seminar, Insights into the growth, survival and proliferation of Phaeocystis from a multi-species comparison during his stay in Jinan University.

The two sides discussed about further collaboration and made a common consensus that they will focus their study blooms of Phaeocystis and build a closer working relationship between the United States, Vietnam and China.
