SYSU Medical Team Rush to Yushu (Qinghai Province) Earthquake Stricken Area for Rescue Work This Morning

At 7:49 on April 14, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Yushu County, a Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture located in Qinghai Province. By 2 A.M on April 15th, the earthquake has caused 589 deaths and over 8000 injuries. Moreover, 15000 civilian buildings have collapsed and therefore more than 1 billion families will need to be resettled.
After the earthquake, SYSU recommended a medical team made up of 26 medical workers to the provincial Ministry of Health promptly. Among them, 8 medical workers jointed in Guangdong Anti-Earthquake Rescue Medical Team for Qinghai organized by the Guangdong Ministry of Health and took off from Baiyun Airport at 7 o clock this morning, flying to the disaster area for rescue work. The 8 medical workers are Xu Xiangdong from the department of vascular surgery, Chen Chao from the department of chest surgery, Li Yujie from the department of emergency internal medicine, Zheng Xunhua from the department of nephrology of the first Affiliated Hospital as well as Liu Anmin from the department of cerebral surgery of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Li Jianguo & Shu Xin from the department of infectious disease, and Ou Qinglan from the department spinal surgery of the third Affiliated Hospital. Lei Yulan, vice-governor of Guangdong Province, Huang Xiaolin, secretary of Party Leadership Group of the Ministry of Health and Wang Jianping, vice president of SYSU went to the airport to see the medical team off, expecting them to return with victory in healing the wounded and rescuing the dying in spirit of arduous struggle and cooperation.

Meanwhile, responding positively to the requirement of the Ministry of Health, SYSU has set up a SYSU Anti-Earthquake Rescue Medical Team consisting of about 40 medical workers, who are well-prepared and ready to set out for the disaster area. Mobilized by the affiliated hospitals of SYSU, the medical personnel dedicate their days and nights preparing medical equipment, medicines and chemical reagents as well as relevant materials that the victims need badly. They also make good preparation of articles and food for daily needs of f the medical team.

According to another source, a Tibet doctor Sunan Renqing from the Fifth Affiliated Hospital has for several times asked the organization for a chance to go to his hometown and serve for the suffering fellow villagers. Many medical workers from all affiliated hospitals have also requested of being granted opportunities to participate in the frontline work of the earthquake stricken areas.
In addition, people who went to the send-off airport also include relevant persons in charge of the management office of the campus hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital as well as the Third Affiliated Hospital.
