Pakistan:2nd National Conference on Cotton Production opens

Write: Rayburn [2011-05-20]

The Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) an establishment of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) is primarily a research institution involved in the goal oriented biological and agriculture research.
NIAB also maintains a close liaison with other establishments of PAEC and various institutions involved in R & D activities at home and abroad.
Utilizing the expertise and facilities available at NIAB, induced mutations breeding work on cotton was initiated in 1970. The objectives were to create genetic variability for the development of cotton germplasm having desirable morphological, yield and quality parameters. Consequently different varieties i.e. NIAB 78, NIAB 86, NIAB 26-N, NIAB Karishama, NIAB 111 and NIAB 999 have been released and many are in the pipeline as future varieties.
Due to heavy and wide spread infestation of Cotton Leaf Curl Virus disease and Mealy bug in the country, cotton crop suffered badly during last crop season. It is imperative for scientist to exchange and share knowledge and to have collective efforts to combat the impending risks by planning effective strategies so that the cotton production can be boosted in the country.
Last year we had 1st National Conference on Cotton Production which was attended by a large number of experts and farmers. As a major outcome of the conference, appropriate recommendations were synthesized for nation wide application for cotton crop. This year we have planned to hold 2nd National Conference on Cotton Production on May 5 – 6, 2008.

Abstracts/papers for oral presentation at the National Conference on Cotton Production are welcome. The abstract/papers should contain specific information on objectives, experimental methods and statistical methods used, together with synthesis of results and conclusions. All abstracts/papers will be reviewed by the national conference scientific program committee and those that are accepted will be incorporated in the final program presentation.
Invited lectures from the distinguished scientists will also be arranged.
