The Olympics 2008 scheduled in China could prove to be bad news for the wool industry. China is by far the world's largest importer of raw wool fibre and may adversely affect Australian wool industry, which might have to brace for lower demand from the Asian giant, next year.
It is being said that non essential industries could be asked to close down a few months before the Olympics are scheduled to begin. The idea is to reduce the pollution levels. The wool processing industry could be one of the industries to be considered.
The drought has wrought havoc on the domestic wool industry & has forced wool producers to sell their live stock in the market. The wool industry was hoping to bounce back in 2008 on expectations of good rainfall.
China has the status of being the world’s largest wool processor and if the wool processing industries were asked to close down, as is being said the hopes of revival of the Australian wool industry could be crushed.
A record number of tourists are being expected during the course of the Olympics, which could be the reason for contemplating the idea of closing the non-essential industries, with the idea being to reduce the levels of pollution
