India : IAM launches Apparel Retail Merchandising Programme

India’s first Institute of Apparel Management (IAM) which was inaugurated on 18th September 2007 has commenced its second programme i.e. a one year part time programme “Apparel Retail Merchandising” for professionals to pursue careers in apparel industry. The objective of this programme is to inculcate in the students the aptitude and skills to work as professionals at managerial levels in areas of retail operations and retail merchandising in the Fashion Apparel Industry.
The programme is on Saturday module so that students can pursue careers while studying. The orientation programme was conducted on 24th November 2007 where dignitaries from various retail chains & brands were present to share their thoughts & prospects for apparel retail industry in Indian context.
The orientation programme commenced with the Director’s Address delivered by Dr. Pradeep Joshi, Director, Institute of Apparel Management. Dr. Joshi dwelled at length on the importance of Apparel Retail Merchandising programme, in today’s competitive apparel retail environment, where the scarcity of trained retail professionals is proving to be a major roadblock on the golden highway of Indian Apparel Retail Industry.
The students of the programme were then exposed to the thoughts of a galaxy of well-known speakers, sharing their experiences with the reputed national & international brands and stores.
These speakers included names like Ms. Anshu Grover (Manager Planning-Lacoste); Ms.Aditi Jain (Visual Merchandiser, Footmart Retail India Ltd.-A Liberty-Pantaloon J/V); Mr. Sharad Mathur (Design Consultant, former Senior Faculty & Chairperson, KDT Dept., NIFT-Delhi); Mr. Rajesh Rathi (Area HR Head, Shoppers’ Stop), Mr. Steffan Bannach & Ms. Aikta Chahar (Catalyst, Upgrade Management Services Pvt. Ltd.); Mr. Surya Narain Bahadur (Executive Director, Confluence Training & Development).
The speakers enthralled the students by giving an overview about the topics like Changing Indian Retail Market, Indian Consumer-Then & Now, Prospects for International Brands in the Indian Market, Various Retail Formats in Indian & International Markets, Importance of CRM & Communication Skills, Various Career Options available in the Indian Retailing etc.
