• Wool handlers - Mel Morris TAS, Debbie Chandler WA.
• Blade Shearers - David Neuman SA, John Dalla SA,
• Judges - Peter Artridge Shearing and Craig Rowsell wool handling.
The trans-Tasman rivalry was also evident in both the shearing and wool handling test matches.
The Australian team won the shearing event, despite having their work cut out for them. With two breeds, 7 Merino wethers, and 7 coopworth ewe hoggets, the Australian team performed excellently in the tough wethers which were cutting in excess of 8 kg. While the Australian team won the in the shearing event the New Zealanders turned the tables in the wool handling, taking out the title.
“What we have seen over the two days of competition is the strength and the depth of shearing and wool handling talent in Australia and the close links between Australia and New Zealand when it comes to the wool harvesting industry,” Peter Artridge said.
“There is a lot that can be learnt about the value competition brings to improving both productivity and from a growers standpoint, quality. I would encourage woolgrowers to become more involved with the shearing and wool handling competition scene at their local level – it is a great way to network with shearers and wool handlers.”
Joe Sullivan Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) program manager congratulated Sport Shear on a successful National Championship: “It was great to see the professionalism of the industry and the passion that people bring to it.”
“AWI is proud to be supporting Sport Shear Australia in its moves to get shearing and wool handling sports to be recognised nationally.
“We would also like to congratulate Shannon Warnest and Debbie Chandler, members of the Australian team, who are also part of our mentoring program.”
