The 2007 China Cotton Conference took place in Urumqi from June 27 – 29. Around 800 delegates attending the conference with estimations that over 200 of these came from overseas.
The main agenda for the conference, as mentioned by Zhou Shentao, President of China Cotton Association (CCA) in his opening speech, was The Chinese Cotton Industry under WTO and its Implications for the Global Market.
Ray Butler, Managing Director of Cotlook Limited, Carol Skelly, World Agricultural Outlook Board and Shi Jianwei, Executive Vice-President of CCA, were just a selection of the high calibre presenters speaking at the conference.
Mr. Peter Wakefield, ICA Past President and Dr Robert Jiang represented the ICA. Dr. Jiang presented a paper on International Rules and their Practical Applications.
The conference delegates visited two long staple cotton fields. With dense plantation, drip irrigation and film covering, these fields could achieve a high yield of 2,000 kg/ha cotton lint.
Xinjiang long staple cotton production has increased significantly since the last time the ICA delegation visited the area about 7 years ago.
