Appreciation in rupee propelled Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Commerce to send a proposal to P Chidambaram, Finance Minister seeking relief for exports of garments, leather, and handicrafts.
Mr Ramesh emphasizing on the issue suggested that relief for afore mentioned sectors can be brought about by means of cheaper pre-shipment and packaging credit.
The Prime Minister was also informed about the need to cater relief to these sector since they are not only labor intensive and price competitive but also lack import constituents. Besides, these sectors have also been providing employment to semi-skilled workers.
Government assistance was sought also because Indian apparel exports were facing stiff competition from exports of China and Bangladesh.
