Erratic climatic conditions in Mozambique have reduced the chances of decent cotton production this year. Cotton Institute of Mozambique stated on October 12 that the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado have suffered a considerable loss due to such low production of cotton.
Although, the average output of cotton was expected to be around 121,000 tons, reevaluation of the figures based on present circumstances show that the total production may reach a maximum of 90,000-100,000 tons. What has affected the growth of cotton is paucity of rain and early arrival of winter.
Since, cotton production sustains nearly 300,000 families in Mozambique, this latest revelation is bound to have an adverse effect on the country’s economy. Presently, cotton is valued US $0.70 in the international market compared to $0.64 in the month of May and June.
