Since the last five years, Karachi markets have been flooded with Chinese cotton fabric. Although a new variety called Cotton Sitara has been introduced in the local markets, there’s no end to the constant influx of imports from China.
These Chinese materials are shipped to Karachi and the import of cotton fabric usually increases a month before Eid. Sources confirm that most of the garment manufacturers make use of this inferior cotton fabric and this has deteriorated the overall quality of local markets.
Most of the cotton fabric that enters Karachi is black marketed and is essentially the remains of material exported by China to the Europe and US. What aggravates the situation is it’s inexpensive price, which has virtually made cotton fabric impossible to be exterminated from these markets.
Over the years, exports from the city have rapidly declined forcing 190 textile mills to shut down. In spite of repeated requests, Pakistan Government has failed to take any worthwhile measures to cope with the situation.
Similar case has been noted in the shoe markets which are flooded with Chinese imports.
Sale of shoes has recorded a growth of 20-25 percent, during the festive season, at different shopping centers and markets in Karachi.
