UNESCO Seal of Excellence was awarded to six of the eighteen handicrafts introduced by Iran, which will also host the next year’s event.
The Seal of Excellence for handicrafts is essentially a means for creating global awareness about the significance and economic potential of craft sector in Central Asia. UNESCO and ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and Development Association had initially started the Seal of Excellence in Southeast Asia. It was much later that the event was brought to Central and South Asia.
Iranian handicrafts that received this prestigious accolade include works of silver, kelim, kelim verni, filigree, calico and inlaid. Although only 37 handicrafts were recognized as deserving the Seal of Excellence, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan had presented a total of 114 artworks for assessment.
The criteria for achieving this recognition include a very superior quality handicraft, which is a blend of creativity and innovation, and also reflects traditional skills. The Seal serves as a mechanism for promoting and marketing traditional goods having innovative touch.
