Shopping for jewelry is no doubt a luxury indulgence and it became even more exciting on September 25, essentially because the fund raised from this shopping spree was to be directed for a welfare cause.
This endeavour was taken up by Bead for Life, an organization supporting women in Uganda, who bead for their livelihood. More striking is the fact that these women have unfortunately been a victim to AIDS, poverty and violence and the fund thus raised, was largely procured for the upbringing and enhancement of these innocent sufferers.
Moreover, Meghan Dutton, a local resident, organized and hosted the bead party, which took place in Hibernian Hall at Wellington Avenue. A former member of ONE (an organization aiming to eradicate poverty), Meghan came to know about Bead for Life from her mother’s friend and has since been an active member of the organization.
The concept of exhibiting and selling these beaded jewelery unquestionigly came from Meghan and what makes this proposition so unique is the fact that every piece of jewelry sold would serve to feed, clothe, educate and support the families of the Ugandan women.
Bead for Life, established in the year 2004, is today supporting the lives of nearly 3,000 people. The Bead for Life party, held on the September 25 was attended by about 100 people and met with a huge success. Most of the jewelry on display were sold out propelling Meghan to order for more which will be made availabe at Emmanuel Church on Sunday.
