The Consumer price Index (CPI) in September 2007 fell by 0.3 per cent over August 2007, following an increase of 0.3 per cent in August 2007. The change in the CPI in the two months after July 2007 was similar to that in the months before.
This shows that there is no evidence so far of uptick in inflation for August and September after the one-off increase in the Goods and Service Tax (GST) rate in July.
In September 2007, costs of transport & communication declined by 1.2 per cent. Reflecting cheaper ready-made garments and footwear, prices of clothing & footwear dipped by 0.9 per cent.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the consumer price index in September 2007 was 0.3 per cent lower compared with August 2007.
Compared with the same month a year ago, the consumer price index in September 2007 increased by 2.7 per cent. For the first nine months of this year, consumer price inflation has averaged 1.4 per cent. In part, these two figures reflect the one-off increase in the GST rate in July 2007.
