As much as the economic recession followed by the slowdown has affected a majority of sectors, the leather industry too has its share of troubles. Considering that most of the products, that the sector rolls out may not be essential items, consumers have preferred to dig their hands deep in to their pockets, when it comes to purchase of leather goods.
In our continuing series, to bring to our reader, the impact of the tsunami like turmoil on sectors in different countries, Fibre2fashion spoke to Mr Burak Celet, General Manager of the Turkey based DESA, which is an expert in leather articles, whether it is apparel, handbags or an elegant dining table spread covered with vegetable tanned leather.
It has its own in-house design and development along with a quality assurance system in place which has the capability to deliver leather products of the highest quality. The design team creates products as per the demand of the buyers and the manufacturing unit embodies the dream designs in to much sought after leather goods.
We began the interview by asking Mr Celet as to how the leather industry was faring globally, to which he replied by saying, “We are convinced that the leather apparel business is a global business. However, it is a challenge to present it as a standalone retail concept. Therefore, we deem it to be necessary to have complimentary products in the range in order to minimize the seasonality effect”.
Next we asked him the size of the domestic market size and the current trends in the leather apparel sector in Turkey, which he explained by saying, “The domestic leather apparel market is very fragmented, hence it is difficult to attach an exact figure. The current fashion trend in leather apparel industry is towards more natural and casual looks. Another upcoming trend is the ecological leather, which has a potential to become a major opportunity for many tanneries, if the industry manages to set international criteria defining this product range”.
Moving on, we asked him to let us know the leather products they manufactured and future additions to the same, to which said, “DESA produces all kinds of leather goods, including handbags, accessories, apparel (Men & Women), small leather goods, home furnishing and accessories, airplane upholstery and travel items. In addition to these products, DESA designs, sources and retails shoes and textile apparel”.
To end the interview we requested him to share with us details of the store count and as to how many countries they are present in. Mr Celet replied by saying, “Our stores are located predominantly in Turkey. There are 68 company operated outlets and 7 franchise stores in Turkey and 1 retail store in London”.
