THE South University of Science and Technology of China (SUST) planned to enroll 150 students next spring and new students would be enrolled in September, the university said Saturday.

Enrollment requirements and application procedures would be announced in spring next year, yesterday s Shenzhen Evening News reported.

With a total investment of 2.48 billion yuan (US$373 million), the university would enroll students who have finished two years of education in high school for experimental classes. The purpose of enrolling Senior 2 students was to give them a better choice for their education, the university said.

The first batch of 50 Senior 2 students enrolled by the university would enter the university in spring next year. They have already finished written and oral examinations conducted by the university and were not required to take the National College Entrance Examinations, the university said.

The university planned to enroll about 2,000 students a year in the future and all courses would be taught in English.

Students do not choose their majors in the first two years.

The university held an enrollment consultation Saturday, attracting more than 1,000 parents and students, many of whom came to Shenzhen from other cities to attend.

Most of the parents were interested in a university diploma. The president of the SUST, Zhu Qingshi, said that the university diploma would not have the approval of the Ministry of Education, so students could have a problem finding a job in the future. We will do our best to train our students, making them first-class professionals welcomed by employers. Nearly all universities in the world have their own diplomas, such as Harvard and MIT, so this would be a reform in Chinese education, Zhu said. (Wang Yuanyuan)
