Cable robbers
FIVE suspects broke into the construction site of the main Shenzhen Universiade venue in Longgang District on Friday morning and stole electrical cable worth 300,000 yuan (US$45,080).
Two workers living in a shed on the site were injured when the robbers attacked them with steel bars.
It was the fourth or the fifth time materials had been stolen from the construction site since April, according to workers. Police are investigating.
Lowest temperature
SHENZHEN recorded the lowest temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius since 1991 Friday morning, the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said.
In the 72 hours from Tuesday to Friday, the minimum city temperature dropped 17.6 degrees Celsius, a new record.
There had been 16 extreme cold snaps since 1952 when meteorological records began being kept. The most recent was at the end of 2004.
Fire injures 8
EIGHT residents were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire at a housing estate in Bao an District on Friday.
Fire broke out in rubbish in the stair well on the first floor of a nine-story building giving off thick smoke. Security guards had the fire out in 10 minutes.
Smuggled silver
HUANGGANG Customs on Thursday seized four smuggled silver bricks weighing 60 kilograms and worth about 400,000 yuan.
The silver bricks were allegedly hidden in an outbound car.
An investigation is under way.
