TWO companies had the 2010 Shenzhen Mayor s Quality Award bestowed on them at a ceremony held at the Civic Center in Futian District yesterday.
The two companies, Hytera Communications Corp. and China Merchants Securities Corp., each received 3 million yuan (US$450,820) for their achievements in management, talent strategy and creativity.
Hytera Communications Corp., a domestic wireless communications giant and a leading supplier of wireless communications appliances, had set an example of excellence in the industry. Its market share in the country exceeded 10 percent last year, second only to Motorola.
China Merchants Securities Corp. is one of only three securities companies in China that remained profitable for six consecutive years. Its comprehensive strength was also listed in the top eight in the domestic securities industry.
The award is to recognize models for city companies and promote awareness of performance excellence as an increasingly important element in competitiveness and information sharing of successful performance strategy, said Mayor Xu Qin.
The city is building itself into a metropolis with a comprehensive quality mechanism and outstanding quality of products, services, projects and environment by 2015. Its overall quality would hopefully reach that of international medium-level developed cities, Xu said.
In recent years, the quality of Shenzhen-made products and services has seen rapid and notable development. Based on the world-known Shenzhen speed, the city was seeking a leap in worldwide recognition of Shenzhen quality, or high-quality Shenzhen, Xu said.
Shenzhen s manufacturing industry topped the nation in competitiveness in 2008 and last year.
These were the seventh awards since 2004 and nearly 500 enterprises had applied for the award over the years. Among the previous winners were Huawei, China Merchants Bank, ZTE, Konka Group, Shenzhen Airlines, Rainbow Department Store Co., Kingdee and Shenzhen Skyworth-RGB Electronics Co.
The Shenzhen Mayor s Quality Award was set up with reference to America s Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, which recognizes U.S. organizations in the business, health care, education and nonprofit sectors for performance excellence.
To receive a Baldrige Award or Shenzhen Mayor s Quality Award, an enterprise must have a role-model organizational management system that ensures continuous improvement in the delivery of products or services, demonstrates efficient and effective operations, and provides a way of engaging and responding to customers and other stakeholders.
